Vaping’s one of the latest hot topics that, across the globe, is on everyone’s lips, it seems. But not for all the right reasons. Sadly, a lot of people seem to be interested in ensuring the true facts about and around vaping are kept hidden under an increasing pile of propaganda, which is basically built on lies.
Like it or not; it’s an unfortunate by-product of our social media age, where anyone can spread misinformation, purporting it’s true, and before you know it, this ‘fact’ is taken as the gospel truth by a large number of people. So, with that in mind, we’ve decided to set a few things straight…
Young non-smokers get their nicotine fix from vaping
One of the greatest myths spread by the anti-vaping lobby is that there’s simply no end of young people who’ve apparently never previously smoked and now, suddenly, having taking up vaping, have fallen into smoking cigarettes because both share the consumption of nicotine. Now, while it wouldn’t be true to claim no young people at all are falling into this pattern of behaviour, it’s simply not true to say it’s something that’s happening more and more, let alone something that’s reached epidemic-like proportions.
The actual truth is that there’s only a very low take-up of vaping among adolescents who’ve never before smoked - indeed, the number is currently below one percent. Yes, that low. And that figure includes teenagers who’ve never used a nicotine e-liquid as well (while discovering the best vape for beginners). So, the true figure of young people who’ve begun using nicotine due to vaping – and who previously wouldn’t have – is significantly lower than that one percent.
Vaping drives up smoking rates
A number of quit-smoking may well be telling porkies; a number of them may not actually have the success rates that purport to, according to studies; by contrast, more and more studies are revealing that vaping’s more successful than these aids in getting people to quit tobacco – completely the opposite then to the myth here! The truth is simple: vaping doesn’t encourage smoking; instead, it’s proven to help people trying to quit smoking and it helps those who’ve relapsed as well.
Nobody knows what’s in e-liquids
E-liquid ingredients are widely known and labelled; it would be illegal to hide them from consumers. People must be afforded the opportunity to know what they’re actually putting in bodies, whether that be food, drink or indeed e-liquids; in fact, they have a legal right to know. The reality is that the myth e-juice ingredients are a mystery to all and sundry is a total nonsense; a lie maintained most often by anti-vaping campaigners in their attempts to turn people against vaping. A quick scan of an e-liquid’s ingredients is likely to reveal that it contains vegetable glycerin (VG), propylene glycol (PG), nicotine and flavourings (the latter exactly the types found in many foods) – although there are variations from vape juice to vape juice. Each of these items’ safety is backed by a number of studies, so to say that the e-liquid ingredients are a mystery is nothing but a lie.
Vaping can harm you more than smoking
This is the number one ‘fact’ that gets peddled. Don’t believe it; vaping’s significantly less harmful than smoking. There are a number of studies all making the same things clear; vaping comprises *vastly* fewer levels of toxins in the vapour it creates than tobacco smoker. While it would be wrong to claim there is zero risk to vaping; in relation to smoking, it carries a much lower risk.
There’s also no evidence that shows that second-hand vaping (breathing in vapour of any vape juice; that of high VG e liquid UK or otherwise) causes any damage. By contrast, when it comes to smoking, second-hand tobacco smoke (passive smoking) is nearly as harmful as smoking itself. Vaping is simply a lot safer than smoking and vaping instead of smoking (or switching to it from smoking) appears to be saving lives – and saving people a lot of money, at that!
