Leaking and Spitting From Your Vape: 10 Easy Solutions
Leaking and spitting from your vape is just par for the course, right? It doesn’t have to be. Check out our 10 best tips for stopping a leaky or spitting vape!
Are you tired of wiping E-Liquid off your hands after you vape? Does your vape have that horrible, incessant spitting problem that leaves your tongue covered in hot vape juice? Have you ruined a perfectly good handbag because of a leaky vape tank?
We’re here to let you know that it doesn’t have to be this way. Your vape maintenance routine can be as easy-breezy as you always imagined. But first, you’ll have to ensure you’re covering all the right bases.
Here are our top 10 tips for fixing leaking and spitting from your vape.
How to Fix a Leaking/Spitting Vape
There are numerous reasons why your vape might be leaking and spitting out E-Liquid. A lot of these reasons centre around the airflow intake valve, which is the hole that air enters while you vape. To figure out why your vape is leaky, see if you’re making any of these common mistakes.
Close the Airflow Valve Before Filling
This applies to any vape tanks that have adjustable airflow. When filling your tank, ensure that you always close the air intake valve beforehand.
If you don’t close it, you won’t be allowing the tank to create the much-needed vacuum it requires to keep the liquid inside.
Keeping the valve open will result in E-Liquid leaking out of the bottom airflow valve.
This one is a pretty simple solution, but it’ll definitely help if leaking and spitting are your main problem.
Don’t Overfill Your Tank or Pod
This is something that’s often overlooked by new and experienced vapers alike. Overfilling can cause both leaking and spitting in your vape.
It’s very important to ensure that you’re not overfilling your vape tank or pod, because this (again) hinders the device’s ability to form a vacuum and keep the E-Liquids inside.
Many tanks and pods have visible maximum fill lines for the user’s reference, but if yours doesn’t have one (or it’s not visible), a good rule of thumb is to make sure you never fill your tank or pod above 80% of its total capacity.
Don’t Over-Prime New Coils
Priming your coils isn’t just good practice—it’s necessary to keep your coils healthy. But some people tend to over-prime their new coils, which can lead to both leaking and spitting from their device.
Make no mistake: you should always prime new coils.
To ensure you’re not overdoing it, simply place a drop or two of E-Liquid on any exposed cotton you can see from the outside of the coil to help saturate the wick. Rather than over-priming, simply install the coil, let it sit in the E-Liquid for about 5 minutes, and you’re good to go!
Check Your O-Rings & Seals
You should check to ensure that your o-rings and seals (if applicable to your vape kit) are securely in place—and by securely in place, we mean that they’re not letting any air in, as this will break the vacuum inside your tank or pod and cause a leak.
Usually, this is caused by something as simple as accidentally cross-threading the top cap when screwing your tank back together. If this happens, just unscrew it and rectify the mistake.
You should also check for damaged o-rings, as these are integral to your tank creating a proper seal. O-rings are the rubber rings that come in spare packs with almost every vape tank. Check that all the o-rings around your tank are healthy and undamaged to keep leaking and spitting at bay.
Store Your Vape Upright
Most vape tanks are not built to be on their side for long periods of time. It’s good practice to keep your vape upright when possible to avoid leaking and spitting from your airflow valve and mouthpiece.
Don’t Leave Your Tank Full For Long Periods
If you, like me, have a habit of collecting various vape kits and mods and allowing them to gather dust on a shelf, you should be mindful of how much E-Liquid is in your tank before storing the device for extended periods.
Leaving your tank or pod full of E-Liquid for long periods of time is a sure-fire way to cause a leak. When you return to your shelf full of vapes, you’ll likely find one surrounded by a puddle of E-Liquid.
Over time, your coil degrades when submerged in juice, which will eventually allow gravity to do its job. If you’re storing your vape for more than a day or two maximum, you should empty it beforehand to prevent any leakages.
Ensure You’re Using the Right E-Liquid
One of the main causes of leaking and spitting in vapes is using the wrong type of E-Liquid for your device.
Each E-Liquid type is formulated for a specific type of kit.
Nic salts and 50/50 E-Liquids, for example, are best suited to low-powered devices like most starter vape kits and pod kits because of how thin the juices are.
Shortfills and 100% VG E-Liquids, on the other hand, are designed for use with more sub-ohm vape kits and vape mods capable of firing at higher wattages.
If you were to, say, fill a sub-ohm vape with a thinner E-Liquid like a nicotine salt, the coil would flood and spit the excess E-Liquid up through the mouthpiece. You’d also likely experience leaking around the tank and the airflow valve.
Ensuring that you’re using the correct type of E-Liquid will help prevent leaking and spitting altogether.
Does Your Coil Need Changing?
A “dead” or burnt coil can cause leaking and spitting from your tank. This is because over time, the wicking material inside the coil becomes less absorbent, causing E-Liquid to try to escape from whatever outlet it can access—usually, the mouthpiece and/or the airflow valve.
If you have an issue with leaking and spitting and it’s been more than a week or two since your last coil change, it’s probably time for a replacement coil.
Check Your Power Settings
Another common cause of leaking and spitting is vaping at the wrong wattage for the E-Liquid you’re using. Essentially, if your device has adjustable wattage, you might be vaping at a wattage that’s too low.
If your wattage is too low, not enough energy makes it through the coil, which can lead to the coil being unable to evaporate the E-Liquid quickly enough. This will, in turn, cause spitting from your mouthpiece.
To fix this problem, try increasing the wattage on your device by 5-10W increments until you find your sweet spot.
Check Your Airflow
You might be pulling in too much air, which can force too much E-Liquid into your coil and cause an issue similar to our previous point about wattage. This will lead to flooding and, again, spitting.
If you’ve tried all of our other tips and still experience spitting from your tank, try restricting your airflow by small increments until you find the perfect setting. This can be tried in conjunction with our previous tip about wattage, too.
Summary: Leaking and Spitting Begone!
It’s hard to pinpoint just one reason why your vape might be leaking and spitting. Much like computer maintenance, fixing this problem can take some trial and error, and there’s no single sure-fire way to fix a leaky or spitting vape.
